Group 1- High School Group (Gerry, Marjorie, Kevin, Harold, Cherie, Rick, Boyd)
Nov 29, 2010
Focus: Motivation and Accountability
Goal: To improve the level of student engagement by monitoring and using a motivational program to encourage student achievement.
Plan:
1. Speak with Senior High Students' Union to ask questions about achievement and motivation to succeed in school.
2. Design a program that recognized student achievement in connection with the honour roll.
3. Teachers will "check-in" with each other regarding test dates, homework, concerns with specific students - Next check in Dec 7th
4. Citizenship - "think" about a project that students can "get their hands in" to develop citizenship in our school and community.
Dec 7, 2010
1. We discussed "motivation" plan....hoping to put something in place before the Honour Roll was announced -but got slightly off track talking about "what marks reflect".....therefore no plan was created.
2. Habitat for Humanity was connected - spokesperson has not returned a statement
3. Calendar for exams in Dec/Jan was placed outside Mrs. Latimer's classroom in hallway
Jan 31 • Hi Jr/Sr Teachers - as per our conversation this AM and Brian's additional • comments (Jan 31/11) • • 1. bathroom breaks - keep students in class and develop your own policy • for students that need to walk daily. • • 2. North end - tell students on spares/DL that this is now a working • space. If students abuse the privilege they will lose the right to be in • this space for one week. Anyone teacher can determine if a student is • "crossing the line"....just email their name to office/north end • teachers and admin will "police" them to the library daily. • Brian suggested that Student's union also play a part in monitoring the • noise, mess and repeat offenders. If they becomes a problem we will be • going back to semester one policy. • • 3. Cell phones - no major concerns - teachers are to develop their own • policies. If a phone is taken away the student may collect at the end of • the day in the office. Repeats will be dealt with through parents. • • 4. Lates - this was the biggest change to policy and everyone needs to • follow the same expectations. • • a. Announcements will occur FIRST, then the bell will ring. On • Monday/Friday O Canada will play with students in class already. We will • rely on NORTH END SUPERVISIONS to push students towards their classes by • 8:54 !!!! (Carol this point affects YOU) • • b. if a student is late they will come down to the office and sign in. A • "ticket" will be given to them that they will fill in: name, • date, time and reason for late. A PAGE on the counter will record lates • throughout the day. Brian suggested a change from our conversation that • once a student reaches THREE lates from a teacher - that teacher notifies • the detention teacher and follows through to make sure the student • completes the detention by the end of the week. Students refusing to • attend the detention will be dealt with at the office with a suspension. • • c. Detention rooms (to start with) Monday - Marjorie, Tuesday - Gerry, • Wednesday - Harold, Thursday - Kara and Friday- Karen D. • Please notify the office and jr/sr teachers every time you assign a • detention. Detention teachers please email who showed up in your • detention session. • • d. Teachers may also send students to the detention room for missed • assignments etc. just communicate with the office and the specific • teacher dealing with detentions on the day you require a student to be • detained. • • 5. Tracking Forms - will continue this term. Please email the office • after you have connected with a parent on 5/6...this will be recorded and • reviewed with the tracking forms that were handed in from the first • semester. • • 6. A hallway calendar will continue to be used to indicate major • test/projects or reminders for students. • • PLEASE REVIEW this list of items with every senior high class you teach on • TUESDAY - hopefully the message will get out regarding expectations and if • everyone is consistent we should be able to focus on the handful of • students that need attention.
Feb 25/11 An email was sent to teachers asking for their feedback regarding new semester two policy changes. Responses indicated positive responses from students and no detentions to date had been served for lates....there does seem to be a "variety of reasons" for students to be absent however, so tracking forms are creating paperwork.
Engery Info - Science 9 is ready to start program with labels and posters - Gerry will update at next staff meeting
Habitat for Humanity Project - no further info has been given to the school yet...
March 1/11 Discussion focused on good sessions each member went to at convention. Diploma exam results will be discussion soon.....
